Painting the bathroom, Part 2.

Sunday, October 12th, 2008

Okay, I’ve taped out the bathroom and put down a base coat.

stencil1.jpg  stencil2.jpg

I mixed up the paint and it looked perfect and then I put on a coat and the yellow came to the surface and now instead of bluey-greenish, it’s greeny-blueish. And I’m pissed-ish. So now I have to mix up a new color with more blue to counteract the yellow. Deep breaths, deep breaths. It will all be okay. I also laid out my stencils and painted them in.

I will mix the new color and continue on my merry way and hopefully I’ll be done by tonight. Hopefully.

Painting the bathroom, Part 1.

Saturday, October 11th, 2008

My guest bathroom has some issues. It’s got glass on one side with the shower and on the other side it’s pure white and there’s no cohesive thread between the two. One would think to just hang artwork on the white side that had those glass colors in it, but I already have art that I want to hang in the bathroom and it has no glass-green in it. Therefore, I am making a mural, of sorts. I traced where the art would go and incorporated the plugs, switches, towel rack, etc. into the design with ornate elements. I made sketches just to give me a rough idea of where I wanted things to go.

sketch1.jpg  sketch2.jpg

Then I went into Illustrator and built the ornate elements so I could cut out stencils for myself.

Now I’m taping out my bathroom so I get nice straight lines. By tonight I should have pictures of that.

Ruby, Fishies and Other Fishies.

Tuesday, September 30th, 2008

1. I work with Nelly and Nelly has a dog, a maltese named Ruby, who came to work a week ago. Ruby is a lovely little fluffy thing who plays with you and wiggles her butt stub masquerading as a tail and is generally all kind of sweet. But being at work all day is boring, so she spent most of her day chillin’ in her carry bag, looking like this:

ruby1.jpg

What could it be? Perhaps a large hairy white muffin? And then you’d say, “Hey Ruby…” and you’d get this:

ruby2.jpg

So cute! I did that about sixty times.

2. I was visiting Neenernator this weekend and, as usual, being unable to do anything but watch her totally rad fishtank. She has a Jack Dempsey:

JackDempsey.jpg

And an albino pleco (suckerfish):

AlbinoPleco.jpg

And a festive variety of other fishies (those are my favorites). She also has two lumpy iridescent blue fish, a male and a female. We were looking at them on Saturday and we noticed the female’s fins were shredded and thin. I expressed concern that it could be fin rot, and then the male sauntered up and started chomping on the lady bluefish’s fins. Just chewing on them with his teeny-tiny teeth. I was like, “Wha…?” and Neenernator said, “Yeah, that’s how he courts her. See all the scars on their faces? They bite each other’s faces and hang on and drag each other around the tank.” This has to be the worst courting ritual EVER. It’s way worse than the schoolyard prank of shoving a snowball down the back of the shirt of the girl who interests you. What do the fish do in the wild? Does a male saunter up to another male and say, “Look over there. She that fish that looks like Frankenstein’s monster, who can’t swim around because her fins are like wet toilet paper? Aww yeah. She’s my girl. Gonna make a great mom one day, if I don’t gnaw on her and make her all mangledy in the baby-making parts. Because that’s love, dawg, that’s love.”

3. Speaking of fish, I hung my deep-sea fish paintings in my apartment. I really don’t like to hang my own art in my own place, it makes me feel arrogant (“Only MY art is worthy of MY walls”) and self-centered. But my momma loves the fishes and she wants to see them all the time, so I did it. And here they are, in all their fishy glory.

Fringe and a bracelet.

Wednesday, September 17th, 2008

1. Has anyone been watching the new show on Fox, Fringe? Does it not suck seven ways to Sunday? The dialogue, it’s so bad. You can hear the writers scrunch up their eyes and ball up their fists and say, “We’re as witty as House and as spooky and edgy as The X Files, oh yes we are!” It’s on after House, so I’ll probably watch it again, but I’m only giving it one more chance. If it continues to blow, I’m going to… well, I’m going to watch something else. Yes. That didn’t sound as dramatic as I hoped it would.

2. I made a bracelet. Let’s all look at it, shall we?

eileens-bracelet.jpg

It’s an acorn and two partridges with eggs in ’em. I think it turned out well. I have to redo the chain parts, one side is too long and one side is too short, so I’m going to go all Goldilocks on it and get it just right.

Creepy creepy onesie.

Saturday, August 30th, 2008

Before we get to that, I was just watching American Justice (like Forensic Files, but different) and they were talking about a town called Truth or Consequences, Arizona. Which is a great name for a town.

Anyway, I painted my co-worker a onesie for the little baby girl she’s having in October. I painted it with a skull and crossbones. It’s a cute skull and crossbones, but it’s still somewhat ooky. You decide for yourself.

skull-onesie-small.jpg skull-head-small.jpg

See? Could be considered cute, could be considered horrifying and wretched. I think the hearts and crystals help. Well, I like it and hopefully my co-worker will like it. We’ll see.

Mental bits and pieces.

Monday, August 25th, 2008

Thank God the Olympics are over. At last, I can get to sleep before 1:00 in the morning. It sure was fascinating and engrossing. I got sucked in like a dust bunny to a Dyson, I tells ya. Now I can return to my normal schedule of obsessively watching Forensic Files as I fall asleep. I am lulled into dreamland by “…and this thread from John’s blue sweater found in the vehicle led investigators to conclude he was Debbie’s killer…” Ah, unsolved murders are so soothing.

Okay, returning briefly to The Batman Movie of Recent Recentness, something occurred to me. If you live in Gotham, and the bridges and ferries are blowing up regularly, and people are getting held hostage left and right, and people are shooting each other in the street, MAYBE YOU SHOULD MOVE. I’m just saying. I was watching a program on the Son of Sam (while waiting for Forensic Files to come on). He killed six people. Just six – and all of New York flipped the freak out. People wouldn’t go out at night, women dyed their hair blond (SOS tended to kill brunettes), there were 300 cops on the case, etc. The Joker kills, I don’t know, like, 100 people in this movie, and not one “Moving” sign in the whole film. Not one character says, “Hey, screw this whole thing, let’s go to Montana. I’ll homeschool the kids, we’ll grow some vegetables and milk some goats. Enough of this already.” My empathy well for the inhabitants of Gotham is pretty much dry.

So I gave my mom the purse tonight and she looooved it, which was great. I’m so pleased that she was so pleased. Hooray on that front. I must now paint a onesie for my co-worker. She’s having a little girl and I’m making her a black onesie with a skull and crossbones on it. Because that’s the kind of people we are. And little pirate girls are so precious! I’ll keep you posted on that.

How you like me now? Huh? (pounds chest)

Wednesday, August 20th, 2008

My mom likes the designs I paint on my purses, but she actively dislikes messenger bags. So for her birthday (August 24th) I went out and got a nice black Nine West bag and just painted the BEJESUS out of it. Momma is from Africa originally, so I put a protea on it. A protea is a big scary African flower that looks like it could be Audrey II from Little Shop of Horrors. Momma also likes the mourning doves that hang out near our house and coo and eat birdseed and are just generally precious, so I put two on there for her. And voila!

protea-purse.jpg

Would you like to see a detail? I bet you would.

protea-purse-detail.jpg

I shall give Mom the bag this weekend, I will report back on her reaction (hopefully glee, fingers crossed).

I made some headers. I like them. I will now share them with you.

Wednesday, July 30th, 2008

Publicis wants a header for some internal communication thing and they told me to design something, whatever I want, and see what happens. I think the two designs I came up with are pretty rad. I’m awful proud (puffs chest). In case you care, I used Illustrator for everything except the word “news”. I used CorelDraw for that. I find their 3-D capabilities far better than Illustrator. I know no one agrees with me, but whatever, it works better for me and there you go.

I painted some fabric. I love you, Scribbles Shiny 3D Paint in Petunia Purple.

Monday, May 12th, 2008

My friend B. likes purple. A great deal. It’s his most favoritest color ever. And he has big feet (size 13), so sometimes it is hard for him to find purple shoes. I took pity on his metatarsal plight and bought some Converse Chucks in his size and just JAZZED ’em right up. They are so purply and peppy, I’m tempted to buy a pair and craftify them fer m’self. I tried to keep these as masculine as I could, but with mine I could use sparkles! Ah, sparkles.

sneakers.jpg

And here is some of the painting in closer detail. JAZZY.

sneakers-detail.jpg

And because my purse with the pomegranate/virus pattern on it started to rip a little, I painted my latest purse with a delightful octopus. He’s black, but his spots are shimmery russet and on top of that are aquamarine rhinestones. EVEN JAZZIER.

octopus.jpg

My kitchen has a big ole piece of Formica-covered plywood next to the fridge, and I think I will make a cloth hanging with octopi and cuttlefish and jellies and other sea-beasties to hang over it so it’s not quite so… plastic-looking. I’m really going to try to make my kitchen more organic. Incorporate some wood and stones, things like that. We’ll see what happens.

Bamboo flooring. And photos of GCT.

Monday, May 5th, 2008

The flooring is made of strips of ‘boo, and you can see the hinges or links or whatever you call it when the ‘boo does that thing it does with the stopping and starting. Sooo pretty.

bamboo.jpg

The only problem is that my new flooring is much lower than the original flooring. The doors are all an inch and a half too short on the bottom. It looks stupid. It’s one of those things that I will fix if I get around to it, but I don’t really care. The flooring looks so spiffy I don’t care about much of anything. Central VA Flooring does flooring Lynchburg, VA. In addition, if you want to add comfort and softness to your flooring, consider getting a wool carpet. Invest in professional carpet stretching to have your carpet look good as new. You can also browse for more flooring options at Floors2Day – Flooring Store.

I chose three pictures for my bathroom. They’re not necessarily the most beautiful angles or the most interesting subjects but to me they have meaning and significance and all that junk, so whatever, it’s my bathroom and these are the pictures.

grandcentral1.jpg

This is a shot I took at about 9:15 in the morning from under the overhang of GCT. The Chrysler Building is one of my favorites in all of Mannyhanny, and the clouds looked really cool that day. You can see the atmospheric haze. I see this everyday on the way to work and it makes me happy. I always think that the Chrysler Building is a giant hypodermic needle poking the fleshy clouds. Why that should make me happy I don’t know, but it does. Perhaps I have a secret affinity for diabetics and heroin addicts. Moving on.

grandcentral2.jpg

This is a swirly architectural detail near Posman Books. I pass this all the time as well and I love that this could have been a boring old bracket and the architect decided to make it into a charming bit of design. And it’s about a foot above my head, so I can really see it, as opposed to many of the other neat-o things in GCT that are too far away to appreciate (the famous astrology ceiling, the chandeliers, etc.)

grandcentral3.jpg

This is right under the boards for the New Haven line. I like three-sided things and I like light fixtures, ergo I LOVE this lamp. And there are so many textures and shapes in this picture. I’ve actually never seen these windows open, only the ticket windows on the other side of Vanderbilt Hall. They should really switch over to this side soon, the floor is starting to wear down on the other side. Anyway, I lived in Rye for most of my life and I took the New Haven line, so it has a great deal of significance to me. Now I’m going to live in White Plains and I’ll be taking the Harlem line, but the New Haven line will always have a place in my heart.
